Arsenal are set to finish behind Tottenham for the first time in Arsene Wenger's reign.
Arsenal are currently behind Tottenham Hotspur in the table after a fantastic season from Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
They were competing for the Premier League title, but with that secured by Leicester City, their focus is now on finishing above their rivals.
Arsene Wenger has never finished behind Spurs in his long reign at the club and unless there is a significant change this weekend, that will come to an end.
It will be something that will upset the club's fans, but Merson says that the current crop of players won’t think of it as a problem.
“When I was playing it was major to finish above Tottenham,” he told Sky Sports.
“I don’t think that’s the case with the players in this day and age. I think they want to win the league and that’s it. I think the Tottenham thing isn’t a problem.”
With this season drawing to a close, attention can now turn to which side is likeliest to finish higher next season.
On this season, the evidence would be that it would be Tottenham finishing above their rivals once again as Pochettino appears to be building something special at White Hart Lane.
With a big transfer window to come for both sides though, it will be interesting to see if that perception has changed when next season starts.
