Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Everton sacking Roberto Martinez

Roberto Martinez

Liverpool themselves came close to appointing Roberto Martinez.

Roberto Martinez received his marching orders from Everton yesterday, with a limp 3-0 loss away to Sunderland the final straw.

The Spaniard had lost the faith of fans and seemingly too the players, and a fresh approach was deemed to be required.

Everton issued a statement on their website that Martinez has left his position as first team coach with immediate effect.

The writing was on the wall for the former Wigan boss after a 4-0 hammering away to Liverpool, which could easily have been by a higher margin had the Reds not eased up.

Martinez's Everton will finish behind the Reds this season despite Liverpool sitting in just eighth place. Everton are 15 points back in 12th, with one game remaining.

Liverpool fans found amusement in Martinez's demise, disappointed that he will be leaving, as his team were no longer considered a threat to them.

There was another angle to Martinez's exit too. In 2012 he had been considered for the Liverpool job, with the Spaniard flying to America for talks with Reds owners FSG, and later claimed, telling The Mail, that he had turned down the chance to manage the club, who appointed Brendan Rodgers instead.

A year later after winning the FA Cup but also getting Wigan relegated, he left for Everton, and it's safe to say now finally that it did not work out, and Liverpool supporters are also feeling thankful that he did not end up managing them.
