Irish legend Johnny Giles backs Southampton striker for Shane Long for Liverpool move

Shane Long

The Irish striker has been in good form recently.

Southampton have recently been in a good run of form and one of the key reasons behind this success has been the performances of striker Shane Long.

The Irish striker has been in fantastic form of late, scoring three goals in his last five games for the club.

That has taken him to 16 goals for the campaign for club and country and a legendary compatriot has been tipping him for a move to Liverpool.

Johnny Giles, who played 59 times for the Republic of Ireland, told the Irish Independent this week:

“In terms of Long’s club future, I think the sky is the limit.

“I know there was some interest back in January from Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp and I think Long would be absolutely perfect for the German and his Anfield revolution.

“(Christian) Benteke looks like he will be moving on and that could open a door.

“Liverpool are going places and it would be good to have an Irishman on board.”

Long was indeed linked with Liverpool earlier in the year. The Irish Daily Star reported that both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were keen on the player earlier in the year.

In a way it is a deal that would make sense. Long is the archetypal Jurgen Klopp striker. A tireless runner with pace to burn he could genuinely fit into the Liverpool system with relative ease.

However, at 29-years-old and with a reputation for being somewhat wasteful in front of goal it would be unlikely to see this Southampton player join several former Saints at Liverpool anytime soon.
