HITC Sport understands Sheffield United have targeted the Northampton boss to replace Nigel Adkins.
Sheffield United are lining up a move for Northampton Town boss Chris Wilder with Nigel Adkins on the verge of being sacked at Bramall Lane, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Adkins is expected to be relieved of his duties on Thursday after just one season in his job at the South Yorkshire club.
Former Reading and Southampton boss Adkins replaced Nigel Clough at Bramall Lane last summer on a three-year deal and was handed the task of leading the club to promotion back to the Championship.
However, Adkins has been unable to transform the club's fortunes with the Blades finishing in 11th spot in League One, eight points off the play-off places.
United's board have now decided to act as they look for a new man to end their six-year wait for promotion out of League One.
Sources have told HITC Sport that Wilder is the club's top choice to take over at Bramall Lane and they have sounded him out about the role.
Wilder, who guided Northampton to the League Two title this season, was on the verge of joining Charlton earlier this week, but the move fell through at the final minute.
That has now cleared the way for Sheffield United to make a move for the boyhood Blades supporter and the hope to agree a deal as soon as possible with the highly-rated manager.
