Tottenham Hotspur were thought to be leading the race for the Spaniard’s signature, with the Sun reporting they had watched him against Liverpool in the Europa League.
Arsenal and Manchester City were also keen on his signature according to Marca, after his impressive season for the Yellow Submarine.
The Premier League trio have missed out on his signature though, as former club Barcelona have now sealed his return to the Nou Camp.
The two clubs negotiated his return on Tuesday evening reports Sport, with Barca activating a release clause they inserted into the deal that originally took him to Villarreal.
Marcelino’s side will benefit from the sale though, with them set to get a 50% sell on if he is sold in the first year, and 25% the year after.
He will now travel to the Nou Camp to seal his return after the Copa del Rey final, unless he is given a surprise call up to the Spain squad for Euro 2016.
