Report: Birmingham hold talks with prolific Bristol Rovers striker Matty Taylor

Birmingham City FC - St. Andrews

The 26-year-old has been linked with a host of Championship and Scottish Premiership sides.

Birmingham appear to be winning the race to sign Bristol Rovers striker Matty Taylor after the Bristol Post claimed that the 26-year-old had held talks with the Championship side earlier this week.

The Englishman has been linked with several clubs following a sensational season for the Gas. His 27 goals in League Two guided Rovers to their second successive promotion, and makes him the leading goalscorer in the top four divisions of English football.

The Bristol Post claims that Leeds United, Hull City, Preston North End, Celtic and Hearts have all been linked with the forward, but it appears that the Blues have stolen a march on their rivals by reportedly holding talks with Taylor.

Despite Taylor's ruthless form, it is unlikely that a move for him will have that big an impact on Gary Rowett's transfer budget for the summer. The Bristol Post reports that the striker is out of contract in the coming months, which would also mean that he would be under much less pressure to impress upon making the step up two divisions.

But with the likes of Rickie Lambert, Grant Holt, and, of course, Jamie Vardy all proving that many in the lower leagues are capable of shining at the higher levels, it would be foolish to assume that Taylor would not be able to replicate his form in the Championship if a move did happen.
