Newcastle United could be on the look out for a new manager following their relegation to the Championship.
Newcastle could be on the look out for a new manager, with Rafael Benitez’s future at St. James’ Park looking insecure.
Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship was confirmed yesterday evening, after Sunderland beat Everton.
Benitez has a clause in his contract which means that he is now free to leave Newcastle, rather than have to manage in the second tier.
It leaves that Magpies assessing their options, with a range of names tipped to be on their wishlist.
Wilkins feels that the likes of De Boer and Moyes are too ambitious targets for Newcastle, but he does feel that Hull City boss Steve Bruce could be interested in the job.
“I think it’s got to be someone that knows the situation. Rafa understands what the Championship is about, but if he’s going to leave then it has to be a British manager,” he said.
“De Boer would be Premier League. If you’re leaving Ajax, you’re not going to go Championship. And, again, I think David thinks he’s a Premier League manager.
“If he doesn’t get promotion through the play offs, Bruce might be one that might fancy that.”
Bruce has been said to be on Newcastle’s wishlist, as they prepare for life in the Championship.
His future at Hull could depend on whether or not the Tigers get promoted this season, though.
Hull are set to take on Derby County in the play offs, with the first-leg of the tie taking place on Saturday.
