Despite relegation with Newcastle, Moussa Sissoko is heading to Euro 2016.
Just 24 hours after Newcastle United's relegation to the Championship was confirmed, midfielder Moussa Sissoko received a piece of good news.
The 26-year-old learned that he has been selected in France's 23-man squad for Euro 2016, announced by manager Didier Deschamps.
There was no place in the squad for former Newcastle ace Hatem Ben Arfa, Reuters report, despite the winger scoring a staggering 18 goals for Nice this season. He has been named instead as the first reserve, in case any player drops out due to injury.
Sissoko's high regard in the French squad is a little of a mystery for those who have watched him week in and week out this season, with the midfielder highly inconsistent under Steve McClaren, and only showing an improvement when Rafa Benitez took over, which asks questions as to why he could not lift his game before.
His form came too little too late for Newcastle, and the tournament is a chance for Sissoko to put himself in the shop window.
He still faces an uphill struggle to get into the team, with Blaise Matuidi and Paul Pogba among his competitors in midfield.
Here is a look at how Newcastle fans reacted to his call-up...

Of all the footballers in all of the world, the one who doesn't deserve to represent his country at a tournament is Moussa Sissoko. #NUFC— Josh. (@joshNUFC_) May 12, 2016
