Can lined up at the heart of Liverpool's midfield for the 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
The 22-year-old returned from an ankle injury earlier than expected for the second leg of last week's Europa League semi-final against Villarreal - where he starred in the 3-0 victory that allowed them to progress to the final.
Last night, it was a different story for both him and Liverpool as they had to rely on a late Christian Benteke header to maintain their unbeaten run at Anfield that stretches back to January.
Chelsea seemed to have Can's number in the middle of the park while there were a couple of rash and misplaced passes from the German.
Earlier on in the season, he had shown signs of quality but had struggled to a degree as well, whilst prior to his injury he looked an integral part of the side.
Liverpool will be hoping it's a case of getting things out of his system ahead of next week's game, but others saw some good signs in his performance.
Here's a selection of some of the reaction on twitter:
It was nice to see Emre Can back last week, disappointed to see him missing again tonight #lfc— piollárdaidhe (@franksting) May 11, 2016
Its Ok that Emre Can had a bad game yesterday and it was not in an Europa League Final.— Rahul (@anne_rahul) May 12, 2016
The infuriating Emre Can was back tonight. World beater one week, can't find a red shirt the next. #LFC— Robbie Donnelly (@Robbie_Don) May 11, 2016
Emre Can had an outright stinker of a game, which is good cause they only come around once in a while and rather today than in Basel— Vasily Orlov (@redrussky) May 11, 2016
