McCoist says he was impressed with ex Celtic forward Hooper while Rangers boss.
Hooper has played a key role for the Owls as they clinched a play-off place, signing from Norwich City mid-season.
McCoist admitted his surprise that Norwich, relegated from the Premier League last night, decided to let him leave.
He said that while at Rangers he used to show his Celtic players videos of Hooper, as a striker they should attempt to emulate.
He added: "I liked Hooper, I still like Hooper. He has a desire, to run and get on the end of a cross. You cant buy that.
"He scores goals and he will continue to."
Sheffield Wednesday paid £3 million to sign Hooper, after he impressed on loan, and he has led the line well for them, scoring 13 goals in 29 appearances, 22 of which have been starts.
He has struck up an impressive partnership with Fernando Forestieri, and if he can help the Owls win promotion he will have a big point to prove after being overlooked by Norwich this season.
