Report: Newcastle United to consider Steve Bruce if Benitez leaves

St James Park

The Hull City manager could be a target for Newcastle United should Benitez depart.

Newcastle United will consider a move for Hull City manager Steve Bruce if Rafa Benitez decides to leave at the end of the season, reports the Mirror.

The Spanish boss has been something of a revelation since his arrival in March, helping his side to at least be in contention of Premier League survival.

That is now out of their hands though, as a Sunderland win over Everton in midweek would see them relegated to the Championship.

Should that happen, Benitez is expected to leave as he has a break clause in his current contract for such an eventuality.

The club are already making contingency plans and drawing up a shortlist of candidates in case that happens.

According to the Mirror, they would target someone with experience in the Championship, and that puts former Sunderland manager Bruce high on their list.

A move for Bruce would certainly be a controversial one given his association to fierce rivals Sunderland.

If an experienced Championship boss is what they want though, then there is no denying his credentials given he has enjoyed success in the division with Hull and Birmingham in the past.
