The striker has been in sensational form for Sunderland this season.
The striker has been in sensational form, scoring 18 goals in all competitions despite his side struggling.
15 of those goals have come in the Premier League and have been vital to his side remaining in contention to avoid relegation.
There is now talk about whether he should be called up to the England squad by manager Roy Hodgson after such an impressive campaign for him.
And Gray believes he should be in with a shout as scoring that many goals in a struggling team is absolutely incredible.
“He’s certainly got to be in with a shout,” he told talkSPORT.
“Scoring that many goals in a struggling team is absolutely incredible and a testament to Jermain. He’s come up with the good every single time.”
Roy Hodgson should certainly at least consider Defoe for a place this summer given how well the Sunderland man has done this season.
Aside from his goals, one vital aspect he could bring is experience, with this current England squad a young one and relatively inexperienced on the big stage.
Defoe is not though, and with Danny Welbeck looking likely to miss out, perhaps the England manager should give the older player his chance on the international stage once again.
