The Black Cats can confirm their safety with a win against Everton at the Stadium of Light later this evening.
Sunderland are currently one point clear of the drop zone, and another win would ensure that they finish ahead of both Newcastle United and Norwich City.
However, Allardyce has insisted that he will not be going all out for the victory, as a draw could still be an important result.
"I always say to the players that if you can’t win the game, then don’t lose, which is one of the reasons why we’ve got out of trouble," he said.
“We’ve only lost one in nine, and I think everybody’s forgot that because we’ve slipped up on so many occasions to win games and ended up drawing."
Sunderland head into their match against Everton with confidence, with their form strong over recent weeks.
The Black Cats have proven very tough to beat of late, and they came from behind to beat Chelsea in their latest outing.
Everton, meanwhile, have been in poor form - and they have won just one of their last nine matches.
If Sunderland do fail to win this evening then the relegation battle will go down to the final day of the season, when Allardyce’s side are set to face Watford at Vicarage Road.
