Report suggests former Aston Villa managers Remi Garde and Gerard Houllier are going head-to-head for Lyon job

Rémi Garde

Both men are up for the general manager role at Lyon.

Aston Villa fans never had much time to get to know either of their recent French managers. Gerard Houllier took over the club in 2010 but stepped down after one season over health concerns.

Remi Garde was more recent but he lasted less than a season, departing in March after failing to improve the club’s fortunes on the pitch.

But now both former Aston Villa managers appear to be in competition for one job.

French Ligue 1 giants Lyon are said to be creating a general manager position this summer, to help the head coach with the running of the Rhone club.

It appears both former Villa bosses are on the shortlist.

It is reported by Foot01 that Lyon are looking at former striker Sonny Anderson or one of the former Villa pair for the role.

Houllier is believed to be the favourite, but would need to be able to provide assurances over his wellbeing after his trouble with his heart in the past.

Both men have previously worked as manager of Lyon so it would not be too drastic a step. Garde, who is reportedly in Australia, would certainly love the opportunity to prove himself after his Villa nightmare.
