The Championship side are looking to build on their promising season.
Mark Duffy, Wes Thomas, Lee Novak, David Edgar and Neal Eardley all look set to depart the Midlands side in the coming weeks after being informed that their contracts would not be extended, the Mail suggests.
It is perhaps not a surprise that any of the quintet are set to be released this summer. Four of the five players have spent time out on loan this season, while Eardley - who was the only one of the five not to leave on loan - was also the only player to make any league appearances for the Blues this term. But having played just five times for Gary Rowett's men, it was clear that he was not in the manager's long-term plans.
While it would have been difficult for the boss to tell the five players that they would be released, it will have been important for Rowett to clear out the players that he felt would be unable to make the kind of contribution that was going to see Birmingham make the jump from mid-table into the play-offs.
Though they came close this year, the money that they will save from letting the five fringe players go may allow them to make the kind of signings that allow them to progress even further.
