HITC Sport understands striker is set to leave MK Dons after opting against new deal.
MK Dons striker Nicky Maynard has declined the option in his contract to extend his stay at the club, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Maynard, who joined MK Dons last summer on an initial one-year deal, had an option in his contract to extend it for a further 12 months, but the former Bristol City hit-man has opted against taking that up and will leave the club this summer.
Maynard scored seven goals in 23 starts for a struggling MK Dons side this season, but he was unable to help the side avoid relegation from the Championship.
MK Dons were hoping to keep hold of Maynard to spearhead their League One promotion bid next season, but it is understood that the 29-year-old is understood to be keen to play at the highest level possible and is hoping to remain in the Championship.
The news will come as a blow for MK Dons boss Karl Robinson as he looked to keep hold of his best players to try to build for an automatic return to the Championship.
Maynard is sure to have no shortage of offers on a free transfer with the striker having scored 94 goals in 275 games in his career to date.
