Sunderland go into their match against Everton later this evening knowing that a win would confirm their safety, while relegating both Newcastle United and Norwich City.
The Toffees have been in dire form recently, and Sunderland head into the contest as favourites.
However, Thompson claims that Everton are likely to be motivated to bounce back from their heavy defeat against Leicester City, and he has backed them get something from the Stadium of Light.
“If you could pick a team to play at the moment it would be Everton, because they’ve had a really tough time,” Thompson said. “But, on the other hand, I think Everton have to try and finish on a good note. I can see Everton sneaking a point.”
Norwich are also in action tonight, with a match against Watford.
The Canaries simply have to win to keep their chances of staying in the Premier League alive, and Thompson has backed Alex Neil’s side to get the three points.
“I do expect Norwich to beat Watford, I really do,” the former Liverpool defender added. “Which means it could all be in the melting pot come the weekend.”
If Thompson’s predictions come true it will set up a thrilling climax to the Premier League season.
Sunderland take on Watford on the final day, while Newcastle face Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich compete against Everton.
