Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that Chelsea should look to sign Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe in the summer transfer window.
Defoe has been Sunderland’s main man this season, and he has scored 15 goals throughout the campaign.
The 33-year-old has rolled back the years, and despite his advancing years he has proven that his deadly touch in front of goal still remains.
Defoe’s finishing ability has been on full display, and Sunderland would surely have been relegated if he wasn’t a part of their squad.
Merson now believes that Defoe has proven he is capable of playing for a Premier League title contender, and he has backed Chelsea to make a move for the England international.
"If you are looking for someone who may not play all the time then why not go for Jermain Defoe? He has consistently scored goals throughout his career and has fired 15 goals for a relegation-threatened club," the former Arsenal midfielder said.
Chelsea are likely to be on the look out for a striker in the summer, as they have lacked a back-up choices throughout the campaign to date.
While Diego Costa is likely to remain as the Blues’ main man, they have a lack of options in reserve.
The likes of Alexandre Pato and Loic Remy have not scored particularly frequently this campaign, and both are expected to depart Stamford Bridge in the summer.
