Leeds United fans react on Twitter to Wootton exit report

Leeds United East Stand

The Whites are set to release the defender, after a report emerged claiming he hadn't signed a new deal after all.

A report in the Yorkshire Evening Post claims Leeds United will release Scott Wootton this summer - despite the defender having signed a new deal in 2015.

Wootton's 12-month extension, which was announced on the club website, was supposed to keep him at Elland Road until 2017, but the Whites's failure to complete the necessary paperwork means the 24-year-old is now set to depart.

Even for a club with Leeds United's previous, this would be a spectacular screw up if true - regardless of the supporters' feelings towards Wootton.

The former Manchester United defender has grown into a figure of ridicule during his time in West Yorkshire, following a string of error-strewn displays - mostly when deployed at right-back.

Of course, having believed he would return to work as usual in July, Wootton's apparent plight has drawn some sympathy from the Whites' fanbase - with plenty critical of the club's perceived incompetence.

There are also those who feel the 2013 signing was never given a fair crack of the whip - though they are very much in the minority.

Here's how Twitter reacted to the Yorkshire Evening Post's report...
