Newcastle United suffered relegation last night as Sunderland saw off Everton to confirm their Premier League survival at their rivals expense.
Uncertainty remains over whether he will stay at Newcastle, after all he began the season with Real Madrid, and now he faces the Championship rather than Champions League.
One potential option for him is a return to Merseyside, with Ladbrokes telling HITC this week that odds have been cut on him joining the Toffees as manager to just 7/2.
BBC pundit Kevin Kilbane was asked about Benitez taking up a role at Everton last night, but told BBC Radio 5 Live he was not convinced it would be the right move, with his previous time as manager of Liverpool.
He said: "I'm not so sure if many Everton fanswould have that one. Would they accept him coming into the club?
"There might be a bit of ill feeling. They are at an all time low at the moment, not seeing any fight from the team, would Benitez bring that? I'm not sure myself [if it would work]."
Fellow analyst Ally McCoist had his own point to make, telling the station: "Right now if you offered Everton a top six or seven finish with Benitez in charge would fans take it? Probably."
Everton were last night beaten 3-0 by Sunderland, with the result confirming Newcastle's Benitez side suffering relegation along with Norwich City.
