Aston Villa are set to drop into the Championship after a terrible season.
Sunderland have been struggling against relegation for the last few seasons, with the North East side seemingly always requiring a dramatic escape to get them away from trouble.
The Black Cats look likely to finish in 17th place this season, after a wonderful run of form under the stewardship of Sam Allardyce.
However, Goodman fears that Sunderland could follow in a similar path to Aston Villa unless they start to show signs of ambition in the summer.
“They seriously need to look at what’s happened to Aston Villa,” Goodman said. “They have been the club most similar to Sunderland. Battling relegation and just getting out.
“You can’t carry on like that. Hopefully the difference this time is that they have Sam Allardyce and he’ll be given all the power that any manager would want.”
Villa have endured a disastrous campaign this season, after failing to move forward as a club for a number of years.
The Claret and Blues have won just three matches all campaign, and they have been doomed for some time.
Sunderland still have work to do to confirm their Premier League safety, with one more win required.
The Black Cats take on Everton later this evening at the Stadium of Light, before taking on Watford on the final day of the season.
