Former Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur striker Teddy Sheringham predicted on the Goals on Sunday show on Sky Sports 1 on Sunday morning (broadcast from 10:30am, May 8) that Sheffield Wednesday will get promoted to the Premier League via the Championship playoffs.
Wednesday, Derby County, Hull City and Brighton & Hove Albion will feature in the Championship playoffs this season.
The Owls will take on Brighton in the two-legged semi-final tie for a place in the playoff final. Former Premier League sides Derby and Hull will contest the other semi-final tie in the playoffs.
Sheringham has backed Wednesday to win the Championship playoffs and feature in the Premier League next season.
“I am going to go for Sheffield Wednesday,” said the former Manchester United striker on the Goals on Sunday show on Sky Sports 1 on Sunday morning (broadcast from 10:30am, May 8) when asked for his prediction for the Championship playoff winners. “I think they are looking very good at the end of the season.”
Wednesday finished sixth in the ‘regular’ Championship season, as many as 15 points behind third-placed Brighton, who missed out on automatic promotion on goal difference.
Of the four teams in the Championship playoffs, Carlos Carvalhal’s side are the weakest, but that does not mean that they cannot win the playoffs semi-finals and the final.
