The English referee has been picked to officiate the clash between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
The English official was named as the official for the Champions League clash on Tuesday, with both sides set to clash on May 28th in Milan.
It will be a busy month for him, with him also set to referee the FA Cup final between Manchester United and Crystal Palace the week before.
He is set to be in for a busy evening as the rivals clash, especially given the last final between the two saw a massive 12 yellow cards handed out, as well as a red for Diego Simeone.
His selection by UEFA shows that some English referees are among the elite, and Owen says it shows there are top referees in England.
“Brilliant news that Mark Clattenburg has been appointed as the Champions League Final referee. We really do have some top refs in this country,” he wrote on Sportlobster.
He was not the only one delighted by the news, as Richard Keys also shared his opinion on the appointment.
Mark Clattenburg - you are THE man. C Lge Final ref. Brilliant news. He's not such a bad ref after all eh?— Richard Keys (@richardajkeys) May 10, 2016
While Owen and Keys describe the selection as a brilliant one, there will be many who question it after his performance in the clash between Chelsea and Tottenham recently.
That was an extremely fiery affair, and it has been widely suggested that he failed to control that game as Spurs in particular went over the edge with several tackles.
Indeed, it culminated in a fracas at the end of the game, and many will fear he may struggle again if the Madrid rivals clash in a similar manner.
