Brentford close on Egan deal

HITC Sport understands Brentford are closing in on long-term target.

Brentford have made a new move for Gillingham defender John Egan as they look to sign him at the second time of asking, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Brentford have held a long-term interest in the Irishman and saw a bid during the January transfer window rejected by Gillingham for the centre-half.

Egan has established himself as one of the best defenders in League One after impressing at Gillingham since his arrival on a free transfer from Sunderland in the summer of 2014.

Egan was instrumental in Gillingham's push for promotion this season, but after missing out on the play-offs the club expect to lose their key defender

The 23-year-old is out of of contract at Gillingham this summer and despite Gillingham's best attempts to tie him down to a new deal it looks like Egan will depart the Priestfield Stadium.

Gillingham will only be due a a nominal amount if Egan leaves when his contract expires as he is under the age of 24.

Egan is keen to test himself at a higher level and Brentford are ready to offer him the chance to play in the Championship next season.
