Enrique made just three appearances for Liverpool this season.
Liverpool have released defender Jose Enrique after nearly five years at the club, according to a report from the Liverpool Echo. Enrique signed from Newcastle United for £6 million in August of 2011 and made 99 appearances for the Reds, scoring two goals in the process.
In the early part of the 2013/14 season, he picked up a knee injury which hampered his campaign and he missed a large part of that year, and it continued to be a problem for him. He was deemed surplus to requirements but tried to stay at the club and fight for his place, but was restricted to three solitary appearances in the FA Cup this term.
He did, however, win the League Cup with the Reds in 2012, and appeared in the FA Cup final in the same season. With the Spaniard out of contract in the summer, it seems that Liverpool released him to allow him to find a club ahead of the next campaign.
Liverpool fans on Twitter were not exactly surprised by the news, but were a little confused as to why the player was still at the club given his evident lack of game time - and some made fun of Enrique's social media exploits.
Here is a flavour of what was said:
Since the last time he played Jose Enrique has made more money than most of us will ever make in our lives.— The Anfield Chat (@TheAnfieldChat) May 9, 2016
Jose Enrique was very reliable at one point tbh, how he regressed so badly I will never understand— Noir (@temisannn) May 9, 2016
Can't believe it's taken this long for Jose Enrique to leave Liverpool. What a waste of 2 years of each party's time. #LFC— Ronin (@ronyb1991) May 9, 2016
Had some good moments but sadly this is how Jose Enrique will be remembered by many https://t.co/uyFV3SC4tt— LFCMostar (@LFCMostar) May 9, 2016
