Manchester United have missed out on the signing of Renato Sanches, with Bayern Munich clinching a deal earlier today with a surprise deal.
The talented teenager has impressed for Benfica this season since breaking into the first team and reports had suggested he was set for a move to Old Trafford.
The Mail reported United held talks with his representatives late last month with a £46m deal proposed.
The Bayern transfer is the first deal United have missed out on this summer, and puts chief executive Ed Woodward under more pressure.
Yet Match of the Day pundit and former striker Gary Lineker believes the Red Devils guru could not win either way.
@RorySmithTimes just makes me laugh. If United had signed this kid they'd be hammered for paying that much for an 18 year old.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) May 10, 2016
Bayern Munich went on to confirm the signing of Mats Hummels, making it an even more impressive morning for the German club.
United were widely criticised for spending big money on Anthony Martial in the summer, but he has proven to be a huge success, and that should not have deterred them from spending big on Sanches.
