Newcastle United appear in danger of going down to the Championship.
Dietmar Hamann has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 10th May, that he believes Newcastle United still have a chance of keeping Rafael Benitez, even if they are relegated.
The Spanish boss has an exit clause in his contract which allows him to leave St. James’ Park if Newcastle do fall into the Championship.
The Magpies took a step closer to relegation last weekend, when they failed to beat Aston Villa.
Newcastle’s fate is now out of their own hands, and a Sunderland win against Everton tomorrow will ensure that they drop into the second tier.
It leaves serious question marks being asked over Benitez’s future at Newcastle, but Hamann can still see a positive outcome.
Not only does the former Liverpool midfielder believe that Newcastle will beat Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the season, but he also feels that Benitez may remain with the Tynesiders even if they do lose their Premier League status.
“I think from Newcastle’s point of view, they’d love to keep him,” Hamann said to the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show.
“I wouldn’t put it past him to stay. If there’s one club who he’d go into the Championship with it’s Newcastle.
“I think he’s seen in the few weeks he’s there, there’s a lot of potential up there. But he said himself we’re not down. I expect Newcastle to beat Spurs, and it may still be enough.”
Benitez is yet to comment on his future at Newcastle, and he says he won’t until the club’s league status for next season is officially confirmed.
If Sunderland do lose against Everton, the survival battle will go down to the final day - when the Black Cats will need to win at Watford to ensure that they finish ahead of their local rivals.
