This article contains spoilers and potential spoilers for Game of Thrones.
There is a rule on television that if you do not see someone die, they are probably not actually dead.
Of course it does not always apply, but when it comes to Game of Thrones there are two characters that could well be returning to our screens sooner rather than later.
The more loved of the two is the Hound, who was last seen pleading to be killed as Arya Stark slowly wandered away, seemingly wiping his name off her list in the process, and the other also has a connection to the would-be assassin.
Syrio Forel was last seen facing off against Ser Meryn Trant in King’s Landing way back in season one and there have since been tantalising suggestions that the Water Dance teacher was in fact a Faceless Man of Braavos.
His flourishes with a sword have been echoed by the Waif – the young woman training Arya in the field of blind combat – and the latest episode gave another indication that all may not be as it seems.
While at first glance the Waif appears to resent Arya, could she in fact be Syrio himself, continuing the training he began under the advice of her father?
After all, the latest mention of Arya’s list – now apparently down to just three people – sparked something in this writer, a feeling that Syrio is alive and well and all too aware of his student’s actions to avenge his own apparent demise.
There was just something about that scene – filmed like an action movie montage compete with music building to a crescendo – that suggested the mystery is about to be revealed; that Syrio has been there all along.
After all, the Waif is the juxtaposition of one of Arya’s most loved companions. Where Syrio earned her respect and her love, her current teacher is so abhorrent it seems almost certain to be an act, creating a character so antagonistic that only those ready to be Faceless Men would let her inflict wounds and insults time and again.
Only time will tell how this one plays out, but the most recent episode of Game of Thrones suggested we are about to see some significant movement, with the Starks at the centre once more.
