Stuart Pearce and Peter Taylor have both told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 9th May, that they believe Newcastle United and Norwich City are destined to be relegated from the Premier League this season.
Sunderland’s victory over Chelsea at the weekend, has left Norwich’s and Newcastle’s positions looking in serious jeopardy.
Norwich were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United in their most recent outing, while Newcastle could only pick up a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa.
It means that Sunderland can relegate the pair with a win in either of their last two fixtures, which come against Everton and Watford, and Pearce and Taylor have backed Sam Allardyce’s side to get another three points.
“Yes, I do [think Sunderland’s win over Chelsea will be crucial],” Pearce said.
“I think it’s put big pressure on both Newcastle and Norwich. I don’t think the game in midweek is a forgone conclusion though. Everton could go there and spoil the party. But certainly [the win over Chelsea] was a big result for Sunderland.
“I always felt that Norwich would go down and Newcastle will go with them.”
Taylor agreed, saying: “I think Sunderland will win the week, which will make it too much for Newcastle.”
Newcastle are only one point behind Sunderland as things stand, but they have played a game more than their North East rivals.
Norwich, meanwhile, also have two games remaining, but they will have to win both to have any chance of surviving.
Norwich first take on Watford, before they face Everton at Goodison Park on the final day.
Newcastle’s last fixture comes against second placed Tottenham Hotspur, handing them a tough test if they need to pick up another three points.
