Newcastle United are set to be relegated if Sunderland beat Everton in midweek.
Benitez arrived at St James’ Park back in March as the replacement for the sacked Steve McClaren.
Since then his side have mounted a late fight for survival with several impressive displays under his leadership.
Last weekend saw them slip back into the bottom three through, with their fate now to be determined by Sunderland’s result against Everton in midweek.
Many believe that Newcastle deserve to be relegated for their poor campaign overall, but Benitez insists they have been unlucky, especially in his time at the club.
“You don’t always finish where you deserve to be,” he told the Chronicle. “Sometimes, you are unlucky, and I think that has been the case with us during my time here. “
Unfortunately for Benitez, there are few who are likely to be feeling sorry for his side at this point.
They have flirted with relegation for a number of years since returning from the last time they dropped into the Championship.
That has come about as the result of poor management across the club, especially in the transfer department as very few signings have worked out over the years.
Newcastle must now look to fix that, and the first step to doing so would be convincing Benitez to stay beyond this summer.
