Jamaal Lascelles issues rallying cry to Newcastle United

Newcastle United could be relegated this week if Sunderland beat Everton.

Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles has insisted it is not over yet in the survival race, via the Chronicle.

The Magpies had managed to escape the bottom three in recent weeks, as a win over Crystal Palace took them above Sunderland.

This weekend saw them slide back in though as they drew 0-0 with already relegated Aston Villa and the Black Cats beat Chelsea.

They can now join Villa in relegation this week, as a Sunderland win over Everton in midweek will see them drop down to the Championship.

Many believe it is now over for them, but Lascelles has insisted that is definitely not the case.

“It’s definitely not over,” he told the Chronicle. “We just have to stay positive and keep focusing on what we’re doing. We can’t affect anything around us, so we have to focus on Sunday. That’s it.”

If Newcastle are relegated this week, their attention must quickly turn to securing Rafa Benitez for the long term.

The Spaniard has been influential in giving them a fighting chance of survival, but he has a break clause in his contract should they be relegated.

There have been indications that he is willing to stay though, and Newcastle must make every move to ensure that is the case if they wish to make an instant return to the Premier League.
