Sky Sports pundit suggests team selection error Benitez made against Aston Villa

Newcastle United failed to win against Aston Villa in the Premier League at the weekend.

Former Arsenal and Celtic forward Charlie Nicholas has suggested to Sky Sports that Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez made a team selection error at the weekend.

Newcastle failed to win against already relegated Aston Villa away from home at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies did pick up a point courtesy of a goalless draw, but that may not be enough for them to remain in the Premier League next season.

Nicholas has suggested that Papiss Cisse should not have started the match ahead of Aleksandar Mitrovic in attack for Newcastle.

“Cisse, this is why we all query sometimes,” the former Scotland international told Sky Sports. “Should he be playing there instead of Mitrovic when you have got an aggressive centre-forward in Mitrovic rather than Cisse?”

Cisse, who is 30 years of age, started the game for Newcastle against Villa and played for 52 minutes.

During his time on the pitch at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon, the Senegal international striker took two shots, had a pass accuracy of 81%, and won 50% of his tackles.

Serbia international striker Mitrovic, who is just 21 years of age, replaced Cisse in the 52nd minute.

The former Anderlecht youngster took three shots, had a pass accuracy of 62%, created one chance, won 60% of his headers, and made one clearance.
