Rafael Benitez has told the Shields Gazette that he will not address rumours about his future at Newcastle United until his side’s fate is sealed.
Benitez was tasked with keeping Newcastle in the Premier League, and although he has sparked an improvement at St. James’ Park, it seems likely that he will fall short of his aim.
Newcastle’s fate is now out of their hands, after their failure to beat Aston Villa in their most recent outing.
The Magpies drew 0-0 at Villa Park, while Sunderland beat Chelsea 3-2 to move into a commanding position.
Sunderland can now relegate Newcastle on Wednesday, if they beat Everton at the Stadium of Light.
If Newcastle do go down, Benitez is widely expected to leave the club. The Spaniard put an exit clause in his contract, which means that he will be free to leave the Tyensiders if they do drop into the Championship.
And when quizzed over his future, Benitez said: “I still think we have a chance (of staying up), so I will continue with that idea in my head.”
Newcastle’s last match of the season comes against Tottenham Hotspur, and they will surely have to win it if they are to have any chance of surviving.
