Paul Merson rips into Everton ahead of Sunderland clash

Paul Merson labels Everton 'atrocious'.

Paul Merson has told SkySports he thought Everton's performance against newly crowned champions Leicester City at the weekend was 'atrocious'.

Everton lost the game 3-1 and never looked in the contest after conceding after just five minutes to a Jamie Vardy strike.

On Wednesday night Everton visit Sunderland, who are battling for survival knowing a win will keep them in the Premier League and send Newcastle and Norwich down.

Everton are 12th in the Premier League, but Merson believes they have plenty to play for - if the players want Roberto Martinez to stay on as manager.

He believes Sunderland will win the game 3-1, adding: "Everton have shot a bolt. I watched them against Leicester and they were atrocious. They still have something to play for - they are playing for their manager's job.

"Victory for Sunderland, meanwhile, condemns Norwich and Newcastle to relegation and the way they are playing at the minute I can't see past them."

Everton failed in their role as party pooper at the weekend at the King Power Stadium and find themselves in similar circumstances against Sunderland, needing a better result.

Their final game of the season is a home game against Norwich City, and that one in front of a team which may already be relegated, in front of their own fans, is one Martinez dare not lose, but a poor result on Wednesday and it could be too late either way.
