Nottingham Forest's pursuit of Gus Poyet hit a dead end last night as the Uruguayan was appointed as manager of Spanish side Real Betis.
Poyet was listed with SkyBet as the bookies favourite for the Forest job until last night, listed at 8/15 on.
Real Betis announced on their official website that Poyet has agreed a two-year deal to manage the club and will be presented to the press on Wednesday.
The Mirror reported last month that Poyet was Forest's top managerial target, and speculation increased after he resigned from his post at Greek side AEK Athens.
The next favourite for the Forest job with the bookies is Leeds United head coach Steve Evans, listed at 5/2. Martin O'Neill has drifted out to 7/1.
Dougie Freedman was fired by Forest in mid-March and replaced with interim manager Paul Williams, but results have barely been good enough and a permanent boss and sense of direction is urgently needed.
Poyet taking the job at Betis at least rules him out and now Forest can concentrate their efforts on other targets.
Fans are understandably growing concerned at the time spent making the next appointment. Here is a look at how they responded to the news Poyet is a no-go...
Well, I thought Poyet was nailed on. I don't like him anyway. Maybe a lucky escape. #nffc— Hannah Dexter (@hannahforest) May 9, 2016
Since we can't get Poyet...or anyone else, I hear Dougie Freedman is available. #NFFC #— Shaun Simms (@KingspeedSimms) May 9, 2016

All rejected because of the owner. Clough it is. #nffc
Pretty pissed off we've missed out on Poyet tbh. But we can't hang on for O'Neill until July. We need to plan for next season NOW. #NFFC— Woof Zip Criminal (@fritzromanov) May 9, 2016
