Han Solo will be back in a younger form with the film set for a May 2018 release.

Alden Ehrenreich has been officially confirmed as the young Han Solo, for the upcoming Star Wars prequel spin-off.

The news was announced by Variety last week, although fans will have to wait another two years to see if the 26-year-old is the right pick to play the iconic character brought to life by Harrison Ford in the original movies and more recently in The Force Awakens.

The Star Wars franchise has been reinvigorated by J. J. Abrams’ recent addition to the canon and it will be hoped that the spin-off focusing on a young Han Solo will be another critical and commercial success.

There is always a risk taking an iconic character and giving him a new face, but the vast majority of fans will be desperate for a backstory to shed light on the famous pilot.

Ehrenreich has recently been seen in the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! His other credits include Blue Jasmine, Beautiful Creatures and Stoker, which were all released in 2013.
