Rob Elliot admits he was surprised by Townsend quality at Newcastle

The winger has been impressive for Newcastle United in recent weeks.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has admitted to BBC Radio 5 Live  that he was surprised by the ability Andros Townsend possesses.

The winger joined the club from Tottenham Hotspur in January and had initially struggled to make an impact.

Recent weeks have seen him be the star man under Rafa Benitez though as they mount a late, and potentially fruitless, bid for survival.

There has already been talk of a potential place in England’s squad for Euro 2016 this summer, and Elliot has backed his Newcastle teammate to be selected by Three Lions coach Roy Hodgson, as he believes it would be a massive plus to have him in the squad.

"I was surprised with how good he is, and he's just going to get better and better," he told 5 live Sport. "I don't see any reason why you wouldn't take him. For England it'd be a massive plus with someone like him in the squad.”

Townsend must surely be in contention for a place given the injury to Arsenal man Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has opened up a spot in the squad.

With Theo Walcott and Raheem Sterling also struggling for their best form that gives the Newcastle man an even better chance of making it in.

On the flip side, a major negative will be his overall lack of playing time, having spent the majority of this year playing for Tottenham’s under-21s.
