Benitez is expected to leave Newcastle United should they be relegated, but that may not happen.
The Spanish boss has been a big hit at St. James’ Park since arriving as Steve McClaren’s replacement in March.
Should that not be achieved though, there is a well-publicised relegation break clause in his contract.
Many believe he is likely to take up that option, as they cannot see him wanting to manage in the Championship at any point.
Newcastle’s stars think otherwise though, with the Chronicle reporting that they are under the impression that he will be staying next season.
According to the report, Benitez has been making enquiries throughout the club into laying the foundations for the future, which they take as a positive sign.
It would certainly be a major coup for Newcastle and their fans, who would feel positive of an instant return to the Premier League should Benitez be in charge next year.
There is still likely to be some convincing to be done though, with the Spaniard likely to want the remit to transform things from top to bottom at the beleaguered side.
