Cattermole dropped out of the Black Cats’ side for a period of time, but since he has broken back in he has proven his quality.
The combative midfielder has been handed a box-to-box role by Sam Allardyce, and he has thrived with more freedom to get forward.
Cattermole has set the tone for his side, and Kilbane was full of praise for the 28-year-old after his latest display.
Cattermole was brilliant as Sunderland beat Chelsea 3-2 yesterday.
And Kilbane said: “It was a massive win. I’m sure Sam Allardyce mentioned getting the crowd behind them before the match started. They were on the front foot all game.
“Lee Cattermole has been outstanding over the last few weeks. He’s really come to the fore and Yann M’Vila has been another good signing.”
Sunderland’s victory over Chelsea has increased their chances of survival considerably.
With Newcastle United and Norwich City both dropping points, Sunderland now need just one win from their remaining two fixtures to confirm their safety.
The Black Cats play Everton on Wednesday evening, before finishing their season with a match against Watford at Vicarage Road.
