Kevin Kilbane has told Match of the Day, which was broadcast on 7th May, that Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic simply cannot finish.
Mitrovic has had a reasonably impressive debut campaign in English football, but he seems to have dropped out of favour since Rafael Benitez took charge at St. James’ Park.
The Serbian has not started in any of Newcastle’s last five matches, with Papiss Cisse seemingly moving ahead of him in the North East side’s selection ranks.
Mitrovic was introduced as a late substitute in Newcastle’s match against Aston Villa yesterday, but he could not break the deadlock, despite having a couple of presentable opportunities.
The 21-year-old directed two headers wide of the mark, as Newcastle played out a 0-0 draw at Villa park.
And Kilbane said: “He hasn’t started the last five for a reason. He gives you more than Cisse, but he just can’t finish.”
Mitrovic has scored eight goals in the Premier League to date this term in 33 appearances.
The youngster’s power has troubled some defences, but he has not scored frequently enough to fire Newcastle away from danger.
The Tynesiders’ chances of staying up now appear bleak, with their fate out of their hands.
If Sunderland beat Everton at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday evening then Newcastle will be playing Championship football again for the first time since the 2009/10 campaign.
