Johnstone makes Warburton prediction amid Everton speculation

Rangers boss Mark Warburton has been linked with the Everton post.

Former Rangers player Derek Johnstone has predicted that boss Mark Warburton will remain at Ibrox for a long time despite speculation circling over potential interest from Everton, the Evening Times report.

Warburton has done a terrific job in his debut campaign with Rangers, guiding the club to the Scottish Premiership, winning the Petrofac Cup and beating Celtic en-route to the Scottish Cup final.

His success in Glasgow hasn’t gone unnoticed south of the border, with the Scottish Sun recently claiming that Everton are considering the former Brentford man as a possible Roberto Martinez replacement.

Johnstone, however, feels Waburton is an honourable man and amid the Toffees speculation tips the talented boss to take up the exciting challenge at Ibrox and stay for a long time.

“I noticed Mark Warburton has been linked with the manager’s post at Everton and it’s just a further indication of the great job he is doing at Rangers,” Johnstone told the Evening Times.

“He signed a three-year deal, and with two years still to run on that, I would expect him to at least see that through. He’s certainly an honourable man. I think he’s at Rangers to achieve something of substance.”

“Rangers are back in the top division, there will be four Old Firm league games and possibly European football too. So I don’t think Mark is going to throw all that away.”

“Everything is set up for him to take the club to the next level and I’d be amazed if he doesn’t want to be the man to do that. He’s started a job and he’ll want to finish it. I can’t see him upping sticks and turning his back on that after just one season. I can’t see him going anywhere for some time yet.”

Rangers have a bright future ahead of them, and their progress under Warburton could speed up with a potential Scottish Cup final victory over Hibernian guaranteeing the club European football.

There is still plenty of work to be done before Rangers can consider themselves genuine challengers to Celtic’s crown as Scotland’s number one club, yet they are certainly heading in the right direction.

Warburton is only at the beginning of what could be a great journey with Rangers, and trading that for a mid-table Premier League side at present would make very little sense.
