Rafa Benitez backs Newcastle's Andros Townsend for England spot

Newcastle United’s Andros Townsend has been in superb form.

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has backed winger Andros Townsend for an England spot for this summer’s European Championships following his superb run of form, the Daily Mail reports.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man has really come in to his own in recent weeks, scoring the winner against Crystal Palace last weekend and helping the Magpies push for Premier League survival.

With Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain set to miss the finals this summer with injury, a potential spot has opened up in Roy Hodgson’s squad and there is no winger in better current form than Townsend.

“For me, yes, I think he's doing so well that he can be in the squad without any problem. When you are a manager you are looking for players you can trust,” Benitez told the Daily Mail.

“He can make the difference in attack but he also helps in defence. He has a lot of quality. Physically he is also fine now and has a lot of confidence in himself.”

Townsend joined Newcastle from Tottenham during the January transfer window, a deal which many felt was a potential risk on both sides considering the club’s position in the Premier League table.

But if Newcastle are to avoid the drop this season, then one player who arguably stood out more than most during the run-in was the talented winger with a number of key goals and assists.

The 24-year-old has impressively notched more goals for the Tyneside club since his January switch than what he managed during his last three seasons at White Hart Lane.
