Aston Villa hosted Newcastle United at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon.

Aston Villa fans repeated their trick of 2009 by mocking Newcastle United with a series of banners as relegation looms following their disappointing 0-0 draw at Villa Park.

The Magpies suffered relegation to the Championship in 2009 with a final day 1-0 defeat against Villa at Villa Park, and the home supporters on that day made sure the visitors weren’t to forget it.

This time around Villa have already been long relegated following a disastrous season, yet their admirable supporters were in defiant mood to try and take Newcastle with them.

Rafa Benitez’s men started the game in 17th position and were boosted by Norwich City’s slender defeat to Manchester United in the day’s early kick-off at Carrow Road.

With eight points from their previous four games going in to the match, the Tyneside club were confident of picking up another three points against a side that had lost an incredible 11 straight league matches.

However, chances were few and far between and Newcastle paid for a lack of imagination in the final third.

With Sunderland defeating Chelsea 3-2 at the Stadium of Light, the two results sees the Black Cats leapfrog Newcastle and put them to within one more victory of Premier League survival.

Sam Allardyce’s men have a game in hand against Everton at home in midweek, and victory for the hosts will see them stay up and Norwich and Newcastle relegated to the Championship.

With the odds very much against them, Villa fans couldn’t help but rub their noses in it with one particular banner reading: “No sobbing on the Holte, sob on the Tyne again”.
