Sunderland defeated Chelsea 3-2 at the Stadium of Light.
Former player Michael Gray took to social networking site Twitter in order to express his delight at Sunderland’s magnificent 3-2 win over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats headed into the game knowing that Norwich City had lost to Manchester United and a positive result would apply pressure on Newcastle United just above them.
Sam Allardyce is renowned for keeping clubs in the division, and his side certainly didn’t make it easy for themselves as they twice fell behind to a Chelsea side not lacking in intensity.
At half-time and 2-1 down, Sunderland rallied in the second period and two goals within a matter of minutes - the latter coming via top scorer Jermain Defoe - secured a vital three points for the hosts.
Commenting on Twitter at the full-time whistle, former Mackem Gray couldn’t hide his delight at the result.
Sunderland’s won coupled with Newcastle’s 0-0 draw at Aston Villa sees the Wearside club climb out of the drop-zone, and now within just one more victory of Premier League survival.
Allardyce’s men host Everton in their game in hand on Wednesday, and victory would see both Newcastle and Norwich relegated before next weekend’s highly-anticipated season finale.
Should Sunderland fail to beat Everton in midweek, they will go to Watford away next weekend a little more under pressure though still in a great position to secure their top-flight status.
