David James says Jermain Defoe has proved him wrong

Jermain Defoe scored for Sunderland against Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Former Liverpool and Aston Villa goalkeeper David James has revealed on social networking site Twitter that Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has proved him wrong.

James has disclosed that when Sunderland signed the former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur striker in January 2015, he had his doubts.

The former England international has now stated that the 33-year-old has proved him wrong.

The 45-year-old made the admission following Defoe’s heroics for Sunderland against Chelsea on Saturday afternoon. The former Toronto FC man scored the winning goal in the 70th minute in the 3-2 victory.

Defoe has scored 15 goals and created 19 chances in 32 Premier League appearances for Sunderland this season.

During the second half of the 2014-15 campaign, the striker scored four goals and created 13 chances in 17 league matches.

Sunderland are 17th in the Premier League table at the moment with 35 points from 36 matches. Sam Allardyce’s side are a point above the relegation zone and have a game in hand.
