Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has taken to social networking site Twitter to share his hopes about the clubs in the North East.

Sunderland, Newcastle and Middlesbrough are all in action this afternoon.

While the Black Cats and the Magpies are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season, Boro are aiming to get automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Newcastle will take on already relegated Aston Villa away from home at Villa Park this afternoon, while Sunderland will face Chelsea at the Stadium of Light.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough will lock horns with fellow promotion candidates Brighton & Hove Albion in the Championship this afternoon.

Aitor Karanka’s side will get promoted to the Premier League if they avoid defeat to Brighton at the Riverside Stadium.

Former Newcastle striker Shearer hopes that during the 2016-17 campaign, there is at least one North East derby in the Premier League.

The former England international has also suggested that he wants Newcastle to retain their top-flight status for next season.
