Middlesbrough drew 1-1 with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer took to social networking site Twitter in order to offer his congratulations to Middlesbrough and their owner Steve Gibson following their last day promotion to the Premier League.

Boro hosted Brighton and Hove Albion in a promotion decider, with a draw being good enough for the hosts to seal the deal while a Seagulls win would see them claim promotion and leave Boro facing the play-offs.

In a topsy-turvy encounter, Aitor Karanka’s men completed the job after holding Chris Hughton’s men to a 1-1 draw - with the visitors playing the last 30 minutes with 10 men after Dale Stephens’ straight red card.

It has been a long journey for the Teesside club after losing last season’s play-off final to Norwich City 2-0, but few could complain at the overall outcome as Shearer, Gary Lineker and more offered their congratulations.

Boro will be returning to the top-flight for the first time since 2009, a six-year absence for the club.

It hasn’t been easy adapting to the Championship, yet Karanka’s arrival sparked fresh optimism at the club and owner Steve Gibson upped the ante by sanctioning big-money deals this season.

The likes of Jordan Rhodes, David Nugent and Christian Stuani arrived for sizeable fees and the trio have played their part in Boro’s success, with the latter opening the scoring in the decider against Brighton.

It will be a challenge for the club to once again consolidate themselves in the top-flight, yet they have the backing from the owner and a strong following at the Riverside should make them competitive.
