Paul Merson tells Middlesbrough players to win promotion for the city

The former Boro player believes that Teeside needs this promotion.

Tomorrow will see a massive game get underway in the Championship between Middlesbrough and Brighton – with promotion to the Premier League the prize.

One man who is hoping that it is Boro who get the result they need is Paul Merson.

The Sky Sports pundit spent one season at the Riverside Stadium in 1997-98 before moving to head further south. It was a memorable spell with the club in which he earned a recall to the England squad.

Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ today (06/05/16) Merson expressed his wish that Boro can make it back to the Premier League – for the city:

“When you only need a point you can really get into that situation of sticking instead of twisting.

“This is massive for the city of Middlesbrough. For what’s been happening over there for the past year with people losing their jobs I just think that this is a massive football match and these players, I think, for the city will produce and Boro will be back where they deserve to be and that’s in the Premier League.”

Middlesbrough has been impacted heavily by the steel crisis in the UK and has one of the worst unemployment rates in the country – which is probably what Merson was alluding to.

Boro have it all in their own hands. The Teesiders need to simply avoid defeat against The Seagulls this weekend if they are to secure themselves promotion back to the Premier League after a seven-year absence.

Something that will certainly be a massive boost to Middlesbrough and Teeside.
