Paul Merson believes Tottenham Hotspur will consider the season a nightmare if they finish below Arsenal

Tottenham are now only three points clear of Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur looked for a while like they might be pushing Leicester City to the final day in the race for the Premier League title. However, they failed to get wins against West Brom and Chelsea recently, handing the title to the Foxes.

But it has still been a spectacular season for Spurs under Mauricio Pochettino and finishing second would be a fantastic achievement.

Although that is not yet confirmed either.

Spurs’ recent blip has allowed Arsenal back into the mix for the second spot.

Tottenham’s North London rivals are just three points behind them, although considerably behind on goal difference.

One former Arsenal player has now been talking about the potential for Spurs to concede second place to Arsenal.

Paul Merson told Sky Sports News HQ today (06/05/2016) that Tottenham would view that as a disaster – but that he doesn’t think Arsenal will do it:

“If Tottenham don’t finish second they will probably put this down as a nightmare season. Seriously, even though they nearly won the Premier League.

“They have to finish above Arsenal this season.

“I still think it’s tight but when you have two games to go and it is in your hands that is all you can ask for so I’m probably just going to go Tottenham to finish above Arsenal.”

Spurs fans would certainly not be happy if they ended up finishing below Arsenal after looking so comfortably ahead of them at one point in the season.

Luckily they effectively only need to win one of their games against Southampton or Newcastle United in order to secure second place, by virtue of their superior goal difference.

Tottenham fans will hope they can tidy up the season in style.
