It was the perfect way for Liverpool to get to Basel in the end as the Reds comfortably overturned a one-goal first leg deficit to win 3-0 on the night at Anfield, and progress to the Europa League final 3-1 on aggregate over Villarreal to meet four-time winners of the competition Sevilla.
Liverpool were welcomed in by their fans who lined up on Anfield Road once again before the atmosphere built inside the ground. There was of course a mosaic on three sides of the ground to acknowledge the verdicts of unlawful killing from the fresh Hillsborough inquests. Last night's game was the first Liverpool home game since that momentous day.
Then proceedings on the pitch took centre stage and Liverpool got off to the best possible start as a Bruno Soriano own goal levelled the tie up early on in the counter.
There were plenty of chances that came Liverpool's way and it could have been more, but Daniel Sturridge gave the Reds the lead in the tie just after the hour mark, and in turn justifying his selection to lead the line. He could've had more, but did have a role in Adam Lallana's goal that ensured the Reds' progression to the final - after Victor Ruiz was sent off for a second bookable offence. Villarreal's heads simply went and the occasion seemed too big for them.
Manager Jurgen Klopp was visibly delighted with Liverpool's effort - hence a solo celebration at the end. Here are the best images from last night's action:
